BIOPHILIA
Curated by Ashley Kalemjian

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 12th, 7-10 pm
Exhibition Dates: January 9th-26th, 2008
Gallery Hours: Wednesdays- Saturdays, 12-4 pm (or by appointment)

Join us for a multi-media exploration of the wonders & intricacies of the natural world. BIOPHILIA will be on view at the Root Division gallery from January 9th through 26th 2008. It is presented as one of a continuing series of evocative events at Root Division opening on the Second Saturday of each month.

This exhibition is rooted in the "biophilia" hypothesis of inherent human hunger for nature and our attraction toward all that is living, growing, and vital. It is also an effort to explore the zeitgeist of the "green" mania in a way that is based more on a sense of wonder & biological instincts rather than criticism, trendiness, or "saving the earth." BIOPHILIA features interior landscapes, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, drawing and other media by artists examining our reactions to and interactions with the world around us. Their work reveals a fascination with the beauty and strangeness of living organisms and considers the interdependence of species, the delights of biodiversity, and the tension and joy of the relationship between humans and their environment.
