ROOT DIVISION'S ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM
Take an Art Class!, Root Division’s Art Education Program, offers highly innovative and affordable art classes. Root Division’s Studio Artists, as well as other Bay Area professional artists, guide students through a variety of art processes, and it all happens in a friendly & engaging environment. The classes & workshops are the perfect length for the busy and non-committal, while allowing enough time for students to leave with a handmade masterpiece and a sense of accomplishment!

Most classes are geared to adults and teens over age 16, but we also have offerings for younger students as well!

All sessions meet at Root Division (3175 17th Street @ S. Van Ness) unless otherwise noted.

We strongly encourage students to REGISTER AT LEAST 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE of the 1st class to ensure placement.

REGISTRATION
Enrolling in any of our classes is easy. These are your options:

1. BY CREDIT CARD: You may register for all our classes by calling us at 415.863.7668.
2. VIA OUR WEBSITE (credit card/check):

  •Submit payment using Pay Pal. (Please use Pay Pal option from our website link only.)

Class enrollment varies from class to class, but in some cases is limited to 8 students. We encourage you to register as soon as possible, as you are considered formally enrolled once your payment is processed.

Cancellation policy:
100% refund - 24 hours prior to start of 1st class;
75% refund - less than 24 hours prior to and through the end of first class;
25% refund thereafter.

Register with 5 friends and one person can take the class free of charge.

DRAWING 101
In this class you will learn the fundamentals of drawing. Key areas of contrast, form, composition, and process will be presented and explored. Students may choose their medium, but please bring a large pad of newsprint paper, pencils, vine charcoal, and kneaded eraser to each session.

Experimental Drawing

This course examines drawing in all its diverse iterations. From capturing accurate representations of reality, to blueprints, to making ecstatic lines, students will learn a variety of drawing techniques and engage in a dialogue that seeks to answer the question: what is a beautiful drawing? Personal assignments, group collaborations, and studio workshops focus on exploring drawing as a technical and conceptual pursuit.
Intermediate Drawing Workshop
Instructor: Raymond Wong (BFA)

This is an intermediate drawing class for students who want to build upon their existing skills. Students will utilize a variety of media and differing source materials to produce their pictures. At least one session will be dedicated to the figure, when students will have the opportunity to work from a live model.
Acrylic Painting
Through this course artists and beginners will work with acrylic paint to understand its properties, mediums, paint applications, and to unleash its full range of possibilities. We will begin to explore some of the options, and to give students the groundwork and understanding to develop their skills beyond this course.

Water Based Media
This class will introduce students to painting with watercolor, gouache, and inks. Using these versatile media, students will produce representational images of landscape, still life, and figures, as well as abstract studies, all while learning a variety of techniques. Through group demonstrations and individual direction, the instructor will help students to gain a basic command of these expressive media.

Screen Printing

Whether you’ve got a t-shirt design that you’re dying to print, looking to forge a Warhol, or just curious to find out how it’s done, this class is for you. The course starts with a quick introduction to the materials and the process of DIY-style silk-screening. After that, what you print is up to you.

T-Shirt Screen Printing
Instructor: Ohad Sarfaty
Dates: 2 class meetings / Thursdays, May 24, 31 (please note these are new dates)

In this two-part workshop, Ohad Sarfaty will teach the basics of DIY T-Shirt printing. Learn how to develop an image on a screen and print a one-color shirt over the course of two Saturdays. Come prepared with blank shirts and images, artwork, and/or ideas on a CD, thumb drive, or email file.
Press-less Printmaking
Instructor: John-Mark Ikeda (MFA)
Dates: 4 class meetings / Thursdays, May 10, 17, 24, 31
Time: 6:30-9:30 pm
Tuition: $100 / Materials: $20
Explore printmaking techniques that you can do at home without a printing press. We will cover various printmaking techniques, such as relief and monotype printmaking. Since all work will be hand printed, students will have an opportunity to create unique monoprints as well as produce small editions. No prior experience with printmaking is necessary, just a willingness to learn and a desire to have fun.
COLLAGE
Instructor: Adam Shaw

Explore the world of collage through exposure to its history, practice, techniques, and materials. Students will create unique collages based on personal interests and incorporate the processes introduced. Basic supplies are included in the course fee, however there will be an additional material list provided upon registration.
Sewing
Instructor: Cathy Lu (MFA)

Got that new sewing machine but don't know how to use it? After this class, students will have the basic fundamentals needed to create their own one of a kind pieces. Root Division has a limited number of sewing machines available, so students are strongly encouraged to bring their own. We will create tote bags & repurpose old garments to create new pieces while learning how to sew zippers, buttons, appliqués, & more.
Photography 101

Dates: 4 class meetings / Tuesdays, April 24, May 1, 8, 15
Time: 7:00 to 9:30 pm
Tuition: $100
This course will guide you through the basic steps of taking pictures and into the aesthetics of photography. This class starts by addressing materials and technical issues pertinent to either film or digital. You'll move to the artistic components such as light, composition, and subject matter. Finally, you will learn how to use your unique ideas and capture them through the medium of photography. Camera with manual aperture and shutter speed settings required.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
TEACHING ART TO YOUTH
Instructor: Leah Greenberg (BFA)

How can teaching artists help young people in their progression towards becoming healthy adults? This workshop is designed for new and experienced arts educators who want to further incorporate youth development values into their curriculum. we will explore the main tenets of this facilitation framework and apply specific techniques to actual classroom scenarios. Teaching artists will come to this workshop with a creative project in mind and leave with the tools to create an enriched curriculum imbedded with youth development values.

Affordable Web Portfolio Design
Instructor: Seth Familian (MBA)
Dates: 4 class meetings / Tuesdays, January 17, 24, 31, February 7 (No class February 1)
Time: 6:30 – 9:30pm
Tuition: $100
In this four-session workshop you'll learn about a number of free and low-cost tools available for creating beautiful, intuitive portfolio websites, and then put that knowledge to work as you build your own portfolio site. Technologies covered in the first class include Flavors.me, Tumblr, WordPress, Virb, LiveBooks, and AddThis. Subsequent classes will serve as opportunities for students to present their sites-in-progress to the group and receive feedback and guidance. No previous coding or website creation experience is required.

Artist Packet:
The Artist Packet Series will address all aspects of the Artist Packet:
(Resume/C.V., Artist Statement, Cover Letter and Images/Image List) including Photographing and processing images of your work, formatting content and strategies for customizing your materials for various scenarios.  

Part I: Documents
Instructor: Amy Ellingson (MFA)
Date: 1 class meeting / Wednesday, January 18
Time: 6:30-9:30 pm
In this workshop, we'll address the artist resume, C.V., bio and cover letter. We will discuss content, format and layout for these documents for the purposes of applying for teaching jobs and introducing your work to galleries. This is a lecture format class with question and answer session.
Part II: Artist Statement & Images

Date: 1 class meeting / Wednesday, February 15
Time: 6:30-9:30 pm
This workshop will address the artist statement and portfolio. We'll discuss strategies for contextualizing your work and organizing your images for different purposes, such as introducing your work to galleries and applying for teaching jobs, grants and residencies. This is a lecture format class with question and answer session.
Part III: Photographing Artwork
Instructor: Chris Fraser (MFA)
Date: 1 class meeting / Wednesday, March 14
Time: 6:30-9:30 pm
Good pictures get good results. Whether posting images to the web, submitting work for a show, or applying to graduate school, the quality of your photographs matters. Artwork is rarely seen firsthand. It is usually judged from computer screens and projectors. Learn how best to turn your artwork into photographs. The first part of this course will address issues surrounding camera technique, lighting, and color balance. Demonstrations will be given for two dimensional works, sculptures, and installations.
Part IV: Processing the Image
Instructor: Chris Fraser (MFA)
Date: 1 class meeting / Wednesday, March 21
Time: 6:30-9:30 pm
This course picks up where the previous one left off. Once you have created a quality image, it is time to enhance and refine it in Photoshop. Learn not only how to manipulate color balance, exposure, and perspective, but when it is appropriate to do so. Image sizing and file types will be addressed. Armed with a handful of very specific techniques, you will be able to make professional caliber pictures on your computer.
