Root Division takes the talent of the local art world and puts it into the hands of school children. We work with Fairmount and Buena Vista Elementary Schools & Hoover and James Lick Middle Schools in San Francisco. Root Division artists teach students free of charge in weekly after-school programs.

Mission Education Center is a K-5 school for newly arrived immigrant students who speak only Spanish. This transitional program aims to help the newcomer achieve the skills and confidence to succeed in the regular schools to which they will transfer at the end of one year. The school's growing after school program offers classes such as poetry, soccer, cooking, and theater, and as of Spring 2009, Root Division artists have taught free visual arts classes there as well.

Buena Vista Child Care (BVCC) is located on site in Buena Vista Alternative Elementary School at 2641 25th Street and services about 65 students in grades K-5 from this school and other surrounding schools. BVCC provides after school programming including snack and homework time, both organized and self-guided play, and additional activities. Root Division has been offering free art classes to student groups at BVCC since Fall 2003.

Fairmount After School (FAS) is located on site in Fairmount Elementary School at 65 Chenery in Bernal Heights/Noe Valley. FAS is part of Growth & Learning Opportunities (GLO), a network of five after school programs throughout the San Francisco area. The programs at FAS include snack and homework time, both organized and self-guided play, and additional activities. Recently FAS has combined with an after school academic tutoring program at Fairmount called Amigos, and the two programs together serve about 90 students in grades K-5. Root Division has been offering free art classes to student groups at FAS since Spring 2004.

Hoover Middle School's ExCel after school program lets students access expanded learning opportunities in the out-of-school hours. This after school program, located in the Sunset district, is attended by many "graduates" of our two elementary school partner sites & provides an atmosphere where students can build skills & relationships while connecting with the community.

James Lick Middle School's after school program, "Beyond the Bell," offers a comprehensive range of activities & workshops for students including drama, spoken word performance, sports, & dance in addition to academic support. Located in Noe Valley, it serves many students who have attended our partner elementary schools.
